When someone thinks of a correctional officer, they think of someone who is big, strong. The biggest and the strongest of the crowd. I mean, obviously I'm an image of the opposite. I'm not the biggest. Nor am I the strongest.

There will be situations where someone my size and someone of my character is a is a better person to put into a situation, to deescalate it, because I'm not one to go in heavy handed. I like to talk about the situation.

I like to see what's happening. I like to know what's happening before entering a situation. Not everyone's like that. So sometimes it's it's good to know which officer is best for each scenario, because we're all we all have our different traits and our different characteristics that are beneficial within this department.

I maintain the security systems there and, you know, we make sure we keep the inmates safe and the officers safe. And I think that job is as pivotal for the safety of everyone there. And I know I say it just makes me feel like I'm at least doing something more.

I'm helping keep people safe. I'm helping to do some public service. And it's something that you just don't get in the private sector. The job benefits are amazing. Honestly, that was one thing that kind of pulled me towards the state when I was initially.

I was in it before making a lot more money, but they didn't have the benefits involved in the state. Always had that appeal to me where it was job security. Job security is absolutely vital to me, especially being a family man.

I mean, I absolutely love that. You know, the insurance health insurance is incredibly affordable at the state. And the fact that you're also getting a pension and retirement is is awesome. You just don't find that very often, you know, in particular things.

And I was military for that. And that was the other thing. I wanted some of that time to go into, you know, another government service so it can kind of build on to that one.

So the benefits for the Department of Corrections, I mean, the actual benefits, health care, all of that stuff is excellent. It's the retirement is amazing. It's pretty much the only place I've ever worked that has offered me anything like that.

It's a huge bonus, but I think there's a lot of other benefits besides just the things that the department offers us. There's the friendships and the camaraderie that I build with other nurses. There's the opportunity to learn. A lot of nurses who come to the Department of Corrections have experience and a lot of different environments, and we

can all learn from each other. If you've been a nurse for two years or you've been a nurse for 20 years, we all have something different to offer. So just the growth as a professional, as a nurse, but also as a person, that's the benefit of working for the Department of Corrections, in my opinion.

Oh, there's so many different aspects of my job I enjoy. I like meeting with people. I like to see someone's growth throughout their progress in the program. So I like to hear from fans. Sometimes we hear from moms and they let us know that they're happy that they're in program and they're doing treatment.

Those moments when we find out that someone's doing really well and that's really rewarding or someone just telling us that, hey, guess what, I get 10 days sober. I didn't think I could get 10 days over. I didn't think I could get 30 days sober.

But look at me. Here I am. So just seeing that that pride come back to them. Usually they're asking, how am I what my day is like? So that's typically what people want to know when it's you know, as it's scary in prison, it's usually their question.

And I and I usually say, well, the first day I was there, when I heard the door slam in back of me, I asked myself, what if I've gotten into now? But after that first day and meeting all the staff, that's work, they're they're they're friendly.

And if I had any questions, I would go to them. The security staff, I mean, their number one thing is our safety. So it's much safer than the general population realizes.

I like the challenge every day it's something different. There's always something new going on, something to do. I enjoy going to work. I enjoy the flexibility of the Department of Corrections because a lot of opportunity as far as career growth or lateral movement.

If you want to stay as a correctional officer for your entire career, there's many different spots you can work in different units, shifts, days off. You can move all about if you want to go for a career growth as far as like climbing the ladder, getting rank, you can work your way up that way through different positions

and get promoted as well. There's also different units of bureaus. You can work in the training division, you can work in investigations, you can work with the canines, you can be on the special teams. We have there's a lot of opportunities other than just security work.

So it can be really rewarding if you look for those opportunities.
